Use Bicycle Benefits for a discount on produce at the Sitka Farmers Market

Do you ride your bicycle to the Sitka Farmers Market? Now you can get a 20-percent discount on locally grown produce by showing your Bicycle Benefits helmet sticker at the Sitka Local Foods Network’s farm stand at the Sitka Farmers Market.

This summer, the Sitka Farmers Markets take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on seven Saturdays — July 6, July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 17, Aug. 31, Sept. 7, and Sept. 21 — at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall (235 Katlian Street). The Sitka Local Foods Network farm stand is usually located outside in the parking lot, or it might be just inside the main door to ANB Hall. The produce sold at the SLFN farm stand is grown here in Sitka at St. Peter’s Fellowship Farm communal garden. The Bicycle Benefits sticker discount is only on produce and not on packaged Alaska Grown products sold at the SLFN farm stand.

Bicycle Benefits is a new program where bike riders pay $5 for a small decal that goes on their helmets, and then they receive a discount when they show their helmet sticker when they shop or eat at participating businesses in Sitka.

The Sitka Cycling Club is the first community bike club in Alaska to have a Bicycle Benefits program, and we now have 14 businesses in town participating. Look for the yellow stickers at the entrances of local businesses to find out their discounts.

Biking to the farmers market to buy local produce is a good way to combine healthy physical activity with healthy eating.
