Over the past couple of years, the Sitka Local Foods Network has hosted a Bulldogs on Baranof summer intern.
Our interns have been a big help during the summer, pitching in with the Sitka Farmers Market, St. Peter’s Fellowship Farm, lead education events, and even writing website articles about local farmers market vendors. The Bulldogs on Baranof program started out bringing Yale University students to Sitka for the summer to help out with local nonprofit organizations, but recently expanded to include students from other colleges.
Usually, a local couple hosts these interns for the 2-3 months they’re in Sitka for the summer. But this year, our usual hosts have family coming to town and won’t be able to offer housing.
We are hoping to find a host family for this summer who can host our intern from mid-June through mid-August or early September. This involves providing a spare bedroom, some meals and kitchen access, and occasional rides around town (we try to provide a bike).

As 2014 winds to a close, many Alaskans already are thinking about applying for their 2015 Alaska Permanent Fund Dividendcheck in January. As usual, Alaskans can share their wealth with a variety of Alaska nonprofits, including the Sitka Local Foods Network, through the PFD’s Pick.Click.Give. program.
This is the second year the Sitka Local Foods Network will participate in the Pick.Click.Give. program, which allows people to donate in $25 increments to their favorite statewide and local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations when they file their PFD applications from Jan. 1 through March 31. We thank the 56 donors who pledged $2,900 to the Sitka Local Foods Network in 2014, and we appreciate your support again in 2015.
When you choose to donate part of your PFD to the Sitka Local Foods Network, you support the Sitka Farmers Market, St. Peter’s Fellowship Farm, Blatchley Community Gardens, education programs about growing and preserving food, the sustainable use of traditional foods, the Sitka Community Food Assessment, the Sitka Food Summit, and a variety of other projects designed to increase access to healthy local foods in Sitka.
In 2014 a record 26,773 Alaskans gave $2.77 million to their favorite nonprofit organizations, up from $545,000 donated by 5,175 people in the program’s first year of 2009. Some Alaskans choose to donate to just one group, while others may spread several donations around to many groups. There now are more than 500 total 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations participating in Pick.Click.Give. for 2015, including 22 from Sitka.
To encourage more Alaskans to donate through the Pick.Click.Give. program, this will be the second year of the Double Your Dividend contest. Anybody who makes a non-anonymous Pick.Click.Give. donation to at least one of the registered nonprofits will be entered into a contest where 10 lucky Alaskans will win a second PFD check. The winners will be announced in October, about the time the PFDs start hitting bank accounts.
So how do you make a donation to the Sitka Local Foods Network through the Pick.Click.Give. program? First, go to http://pfd.alaska.gov/ and fill out your PFD application. When you get to the section of the application asking if you want to participate in Pick.Click.Give. Charitable Contributions program, click on the PCG link and search for the Sitka Local Foods Network. You also can look for us by using the town search for Sitka.
The Pick.Click.Give. program is available only to people who file their PFD applications online, and not to those who file by mail. Even though you can’t file a new PFD application after March 31, you can go back into your application and update your Pick.Click.Give. donations through Aug. 31 each year.

At the Sitka Local Foods Network, we know people are busy and they don’t have time to check our website or Facebook page every day to see what’s happening. So we will be launching a monthly newsletter to give folks another way to stay up to date.
The monthly newsletter will feature some brief updates on the top stories from our website, along with information about upcoming classes, the Sitka Farmers Market, St. Peter’s Fellowship Farm garden parties, garden advice, volunteer opportunities, and more. There also will be information about local foods programs offered by other groups, such as classes from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service or events from the Sitka Seafood Festival, that Sitkans might find interesting. We’ll try to keep things fairly short, with links in the newsletter to the longer stories on our website for those who want more info.

You should receive an email asking you to confirm your subscription, which will open a link where you can let us know more about your interests. At the Sitka Local Foods Network, we encourage Sitka residents to shop from local businesses first. But when you live in rural Alaska you sometimes can’t find what you need in town, so many people end up shopping online. Now you can support your Sitka Local Foods Network every time you shop using the AmazonSmile program.
Launched in October, the AmazonSmile program allows shoppers to pick a charity of their choice to receive a small portion (0.5 percent) of every eligible purchase they make in the program. Even though the shared percentage is small, the way people in rural Alaska shop online it quickly can add up to significant support for local foods in Sitka. Nearly all purchases qualify for AmazonSmile (except for some digital products), and all you have to do is look for the eligibility logo by each item (see logo in upper right corner of this paragraph).
Shopping using the AmazonSmile program is simple, just type “smile.amazon.com” into your browser’s address bar instead of the usual “www.amazon.com.” When you get to the page, you will be asked to select your favorite charity, so make sure to type “Sitka Local Foods Network” into the search bar. There are thousands of large national, state, and local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in the program, so make sure your page says “Supporting Sitka Local Foods Network” next to the AmazonSmile logo in the top left corner.
The only drawback to AmazonSmile is remembering to type smile.amazon.com
when you shop instead of the usual amazon.com. Luckily, both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers have extension programs to help take you directly to AmazonSmile:
These browser extension programs simply redirect you to smile.amazon.com when you forget and just type amazon.com (or click a link or use a bookmark).
So don’t forget to shop with local businesses in Sitka first. But if you can’t find what you need in town and decide to shop online, please use the AmazonSmile program and support your Sitka Local Foods Network.
Here’s how the Double Your Dividend Sweepstakes works. Those Alaskans who choose to make a Pick.Click.Give. donation to one of the more than 500 qualifying 501(c)(3) Alaska nonprofit organizations (22 from Sitka, including the Sitka Local Foods Network) when they file their PFD application will be entered into the sweepstakes. All non-anonymous donations made before the PFD application due date of March 31 will count for the sweepstakes. On Sept. 15, the names of 10 lucky Alaskans will be drawn and the winners will be announced on Oct. 1. One of the reasons for the sweepstakes is a technical glitch in January that prevented a lot of Alaskans from being able to make Pick.Click.Give. donations when they filed their PFD applications. The 2014 PFDs should be much bigger than the PFDs from the last couple of years, which makes this a great time to share the wealth with nonprofit organizations in your communities.
