Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H club hosts open house on Oct. 1, and a variety of events in October

The Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H club is hosting an open house on Oct. 1 and various events for Sitka youth during the month of October.

The 4-H registration and open house event is from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Southeast Alaska Career Center (205 Baranof St.). There is an annual 4-H club registration fee of $26 (which is good for other events, too), and scholarships are available.

Two of the event highlights involve local food and are part of the Wild Edibles Series — Wild Edible Creations for ages 5-8, and Salmon Celebration for ages 10 and older.

The Wild Edible Creations program or art and cooking with wild edibles costs $10 (supply fee) and runs from 1:30-3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28, and from 4:30-6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. This program involves a variety of locations and includes online and in-person sessions. Scholarships are available.

The Salmon Celebration program teaches kids how to filet and cook local salmon and make salmon art. It has a $15 supply fee, and takes place from 3:30-5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12; 3:30-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13; and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 17. Locations vary, and with be virtual and in-person.

Other events include Biking To Safety, Birding Club, Voting and Advocacy Workshop, Open HeART Club, and Mars Rover STEM Solar Challenge. Details on those events are available at the open house.

Alaska Way of Life 4-H Club to host five-week Wild Edibles Series for youth

Want to learn more about the food growing around you? The Alaska Way of Life 4-H Club will host a five-week Wild Edibles Series for youth ages 5-18 from 3:30-5 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, from Oct. 14 through Nov. 13, at a variety of locations around Sitka.

Participants will interact with wild edibles in a variety of ways, including identification, harvest, local importance, and preparation. Topics this year include berries, mushrooms, salmon and seaweed, with the emphasis on harvesting and eating. The series will build up to cooking and preparing food for the annual Sitka Conservation Society Wild Foods Potluck from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

Spots are limited, and the cost of the series is $15 per person. All participants must be registered with 4-H, which is $25 for the full year. Scholarships are available.

Alaska Way of Life 4-H Club to host six-week Wild Edibles Series for youth

Want to learn more about the food growing around you? The Alaska Way of Life 4-H Club will host a six-week Wild Edibles Series for youth from Sept. 11 through Oct. 24 at a variety of locations around Sitka.

Participants will interact with wild edibles in a variety of ways, including identification, harvest, local importance, and preparation. Ages 5-8 will meet from 3-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, while ages 9-older will meet from 3:30-5 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Spots are limited, and the cost of the series is $10 per person. The registration deadline is Thursday, Sept. 6. All participants must be registered with 4-H, which is $25 for the full year. Scholarships are available.
