Alaskans Owns 2024 early bird seafood shares on sale now

SITKA, Alaska – Alaskans Own is excited to announce that seafood lovers throughout Alaska and Seattle can now sign up for Alaskans Own’s 2024 Monthly Seafood Shares. This year marks the 15th year that Alaskans Own will deliver monthly shares of wild Alaskan seafood directly to consumers through its Community Supported Fishery.

Based on the widespread Community Supported Agriculture (aka, CSAs) model, CSFs are a way for people to buy a “share” of seafood before the fishing season, giving fishermen some certainty that they have a market before they head out to the fishing grounds. Founded in 2009 by the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association (ALFA), Alaskans Own is Alaska’s first and oldest Community Supported Fishery and offers Monthly Seafood Shares subscriptions in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Sitka, Juneau, Seattle and starting this year in Bellingham.

In 2024, all profits from Alaskans Own seafood sales will go towards ALFA’s Fishery Conservation Network and community health and resilience programs such as ALFA’s Seafood Distribution Network. The Seafood Donation Program, now the Seafood Distribution Network, was created in 2020 in response to COVID-19 and the rise in demand for food assistance throughout Alaska and the greater Pacific Northwest region.

Thanks to funding from Catch Together, Multiplier, The Alaska Community Foundation and affiliate Sitka Legacy Fund, First Bank of Alaska, Sealaska, Sitka Rotary Club, The Wave Foundation, Seafood Producers Cooperative, Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association, Bristol Bay Native Corporation, Bristol Bay Science and Research Institute and a host of individual and business donors, ALFA was able to help deliver more than 650,000 donated seafood meals to more than 100,000 families to date. Given the Seafood Distribution Network’s success and continued food insecurity amongst thousands of Alaska households, ALFA and network partners are working to sustain the Seafood Distribution Network and will dedicate a portion of Alaskans Own’s Monthly Seafood Shares to support this important work.

“As a Community Supported Fishery, community is at the heart of who we are and everything we do at Alaskans Own. Our top priority is to take care of our community, whether that’s by safeguarding ocean health, paying local fishermen a good price for their catch, providing our customers with premium quality fish, or ensuring that all Alaskans can have access to nutritious, wild seafood,” said Natalie Sattler, Alaskans Own Program Director. “When someone signs up for our Monthly Seafood Share, they’re not only taking care of their family’s health, but they’re also directly supporting conservation of Alaska’s fisheries and seafood donations for families in need.”

This year Alaskans Own will continue to offer the option for customers to choose from a selection of Monthly Seafood Shares, including a Seafood Variety Share, Salmon Lovers Share, and White Fish Share. All Monthly Seafood Share options feature hook-and-line caught wild Alaska seafood harvested by Southeast Alaska’s troll and longline fishermen.

We want our fish to do good and build community. Sitka-based fishing group seeks applicants for crew training program

The Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association (ALFA), a Sitka-based fishing group, and partner organization Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust (ASFT) are seeking applicants for the Crew Training Program. Through a safe and well-guided entry-level experience, the program aims to provide young people an opportunity to gain experience in, as well as an understanding of, commercial fishing and its importance to supporting coastal communities. 

Formalized as part of ALFA’s Young Fishermen Initiative in 2015 — in late 2017 ALFA was awarded funds to get more boots on deck statewide. Since 2015, more than 100 apprentices have been trained and placed on local fishing vessels in Southeast Alaska. This crew training program is a way to attract younger entrants into an industry where the average fisherman’s age in Alaska is older than 50. 

Over several years, one of the skipper participants, ALFA Member Eric Jordan of the F/V I Gotta, has brought more than 50 young people fishing as part of ALFA’s Crew Training Program. While on the water, Eric teaches these deckhands the intricacies of commercial fishing and demonstrates sustainable fishing practices to encourage a strong conservation ethic. 

The Crew Training Program aims to 1) provide young people with an interest in pursuing a career in commercial fishing an opportunity to gain experience; and, 2) give young people the opportunity to better understand commercial fishing, the lifestyle it provides, and its important role in supporting coastal communities. All while providing a safe, well-guided, entry level experience.

 In 2024, ALFA and ASFT hope to place several apprentices with local and regional skippers and enhance local employment opportunities. As Executive Director of ALFA, Linda Behnken explains, “With support from numerous funders, we have been fortunate to expand the program to include more boats, crew, and communities. Our goal is to provide young people with a safe introduction to Alaska’s fisheries and to share the curriculum we have developed through our program with fishing groups in other parts of the State and country.” Already, we have shared the Crew Training Program curriculum with several organizations throughout Alaska and coastal organizations throughout the U.S.

Since the inception of the Crew Training Program, ALFA and ASFT have been awarded several grants to support this program from groups including the Edgerton Foundation, the City and Borough of Sitka, the Alaska Community Foundation, OneUSDA Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy, National Sea Grant’s Young Fishermen’s Development Program and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). ALFA and ASFT are very grateful for the support of these organizations and from our community. According to funders, “the work funded by these grants will result in improved management that strengthens the welfare of fishermen and local communities, promoting healthy fish stocks and healthy fisheries.”

Sitka-based fishing group, Bristol Bay community members collect more than 5,000 pounds of donated salmon for Yukon and Chignik communities

DILLINGHAM, Alaska — In June, Dillingham-area residents harvested and collected more than 5,000 pounds of subsistence-caught sockeye salmon that will be distributed to families in the Yukon and Chignik river areas unable to harvest their own local salmon due to low salmon returns.

The salmon donation was coordinated through the Sitka-based Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association’s (ALFA) Seafood Distribution Network with the help of local partners, including Northline Seafoods, Bristol Bay Native Association, Grant Aviation, and Bristol Bay Native Corporation.

In June, before Bristol Bay’s commercial fishery opened, local Dillingham residents helped ALFA collect subsistence salmon from families who were fishing at Dillingham’s Kanakanak Beach. Sitka-based Northline Seafoods — a new seafood processor in Bristol Bay that specializes in processing and freezing whole fish — helped oversee the cleaning and freezing of the salmon. The salmon was frozen whole in response to requests from Yukon and Chignik communities for whole fish so that they could fully use the salmon and practice their food traditions. In addition, each salmon was labeled with the name of the family that donated it.

In the coming weeks, Grant Aviation will help fly the salmon to Yukon and Chignik villages, including Alakanuk, Pitkas Point, Saint Mary’s, Chignik Lagoon, and Chignik Bay. The fish will also be used by the Yukon River Drainage Fishermen’s Association Educational Exchange program where several youth will travel to communities on the Yukon and share their experiences around salmon.

“This salmon donation project was a bit of an experiment for us; we didn’t know how many people would be willing to contribute a portion of their subsistence harvest for families that they didn’t know. When people heard that we were collecting salmon for the Yukon and Chigniks, they jumped at the chance to contribute and help other Alaskans — especially those who depend on subsistence for their diet and culture. We were thrilled by the positive responses and were able to collect our target of 5,000 pounds of salmon much quicker than anticipated,” said Natalie Sattler, program director for the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association. “We couldn’t have done it without the generous support of our partners, especially Bristol Bay Native Association, Grant Aviation, and Northline Seafoods.”

“Our company was first approached in 2020 to help address the growing shortage of salmon in Alaska’s rural communities and have been involved in the Seafood Distribution Network ever since. Making sure local Alaskans have access to high quality seafood is incredibly important to us and we are committed to supporting the Network’s ongoing efforts to build the infrastructure and distribution systems needed to improve the resiliency and sustainability of Alaska’s local food system,” CEO of Northline Seafoods Ben Blakey said. 

“At a time when so many communities are struggling with low salmon returns and facing another summer of empty smokehouses and freezers, I am filled with hope to see local, grassroots efforts like this salmon donation project in Dillingham. This project not only embodies what subsistence is all about, but it is also an example of Alaskans at their best: sharing and taking care of each other during times of need. Low salmon abundance is an issue that needs to be addressed at every level, from the federal government down to individual communities, and efforts like this are an important piece of that larger goal, ” Alaska U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola said.

The Seafood Distribution Network emerged through ALFA’s Seafood Donation Program, which was started in March 2020 in response to COVID-19 and its impacts on local fisheries and families. Since then, ALFA’s Seafood Donation Program has provided more than 645,000 donated Alaska seafood meals to families experiencing food insecurity in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

With funding from the USDA, ALFA is currently undergoing a Regional Food System Partnership planning process in which it will develop a more long-term plan for the Seafood Distribution Network and future seafood donation efforts.

Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association and Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust host Spring Virtual Fishermen’s EXPO

The Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association (ALFA) and the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust (ASFT) will host a Spring Virtual Fishermen’s EXPO from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 4-5.

The EXPO will provide educational workshops and training to new and experienced local fishermen as well as others with interest in the fishing sector. During this EXPO all the workshops and presentations will be offered in a virtual format.

Commercial and subsistence fishermen of all gear types will have the opportunity to attend free and interactive classes on fishermen training courses, commercial fishing insurance, management updates on halibut bycatch and and pending salmon bycatch actions, business planning for fishermen, break-even analysis, preparing for your lender, deckhand logbook updates, troller-led oceanography in Southeast Alaska, ALFA’s crew training program and more.

Presenters include Maddie Lightsey with Alaska Boats and Permits, Jess Sarsfield with AgWest Farm Credit, Marc Wheeler with Spruce Root, Sunny Rice and Gabe Dunham with Alaska SeaGrant, Linda Behnken and Natalie Sattler with ALFA, Kirk Johanson and Dylan Hopper with SeaMountain Insurance and Tyler Hennon with the University of Alaska Fairbanks. 

Attendees are welcome to participate in as many sessions as they are able. Raffle prizes are available for those that attend sessions.
